The symposium will examine the importance of an artistically comprehensive approach, ranging from art archives to artists’ archives, from performance archives and mail art archives to archives for artists’ publications with their different contexts in contemporary art.

Art archives and archives for artists‘ publications are extended archives. Archives today hardly serve as locations of depositing knowledge in terms of its collection and administration. With the replacement of the bureaucratic notion of an archive, the question arises in how far visualizations and enactments of archival material allow for spaces of human action to emerge. How can concepts of extended archives make their potential of knowledge and reception accessible by forms of agency, based on new approaches such as staging, curating or performing the archive?

To what extent are the various art archives counter archives or identity archives that represent and establish the perspectives of particular groups? How to document contexts of networking and counter-publicity in which alternative, marginalized and emerging socio-political, sociocultural and / or artistic ideas are taken up, made public and disseminated? What is the significance of the use of archival material for artistic practices, which intervene with updating questions in the ordering structure of the inventory, bringing it to speak with new forms of display.

Internationales Symposium anlässlich des zwanzigjährigen Bestehens von Zentrum für Künstlerpublikationen und Forschungsverbund Künstlerpublikationen

Im Rahmen des Symposiums wird die Bedeutung eines künstlerisch umfassenden Ansatzes von Kunstarchiven über Künstlerarchive, Performancearchive und Mail Art Archive bis hin zu Archiven für Künstlerpublikationen mit ihren unterschiedlichen Kontexten in der zeitgenössischen Kunst untersucht. Bei Kunstarchiven und Archiven für Künstlerpublikationen handelt es sich um extended archives.

Archive dienen heute kaum noch als Orte der Wissensablage in Bezug auf Sammlung und Verwaltung. Mit der Ablösung des bürokratischen Archivbegriffs stellt sich die Frage, inwieweit Visualisierungen und Inszenierungen von Archivmaterial Räume menschlichen Handelns entstehen lassen. Wie können Konzepte erweiterter Archive ihr Wissens- und Rezeptionspotential durch Tätigkeitsformen zugänglich machen, die auf neuen Ansätzen wie Inszenierung, Kuratieren oder Aufführung des Archivs beruhen? Inwieweit sind die verschiedenen Kunstarchive Gegenarchive oder Identitätsarchive, die die Perspektiven bestimmter Gruppen repräsentieren und etablieren? Wie können Kontexte der Vernetzung und Gegenöffentlichkeit dokumentiert werden, in denen alternative, marginalisierte und aufkommende soziopolitische, soziokulturelle und / oder künstlerische Ideen aufgegriffen, veröffentlicht und verbreitet werden? Welche Bedeutung hat die Verwendung von Archivmaterial für künstlerische Praktiken, die mit aktualisierten Fragen in die Ordnungsstruktur des Inventars eingreifen und es mit neuen Darstellungsformen in Verbindung bringen?
